Finally a Chimbori recipe for Chimbori.com. Got this from my Mami-ajji. Haven't yet tried it since I returned from India but I remember that this is exactly how our Mum used to make it.
I just could not resist posting it up even before I tried it. I will update with better proportions of ingredients once I have tried the recipe myself.
Ingredients
- Crabs (pick live ones; pre-killed ones can cause allergies)
- Garlic
- Onion Sliced
- Desiccated coconut
- Black Pepper
- A few cloves of Garlic for tadka
- Very little Turmeric
- A very little Red Chilli Powder
Procedure
- In a hot tawa, toast in little oil - garlic, onion, dry coconut, black pepper. Make a paste.
- Clean The crab, remove & discard the triangular piece from stomach.
- For tadka, use a few cloves of garlic.
- Add crab body and claws (Depending upon size of shell, you may want to half the body)
- Add salt, turmeric and very little red chilli.
- Add the prepared ground masala and fry for a while.
- Add juice from rest of the legs. (the juice should be filtered thru a fine cloth many times as fine grit from shell can cause stomach upset.)
Tips
- The juice can be extracted using a blender/grinder. Blend legs and water in blender. Filter mixture thru fine cloth.
- DO NOT try this recipe on hot summer days, the black pepper and crab together make for a very 'garam' combination. (That's instructions from Mami-ajji)
